AWA NEWS: “Lighting For The Elderly” Series – Part 4 of 4

Where Are We Going?

The COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting economic recession have negatively affected many people’s mental health and created new barriers for people already suffering from mental illness and substance use disorders. During the pandemic, about 4 in 10 adults in the U.S. have reported symptoms of anxiety or depressive disorder, a share that has been largely consistent, up from one in ten adults who reported these symptoms from January to June 2019 (source U.S. Census Bureau)

  • 800,000/ Year Death From Suicides in Young People (source WHO)
  • 1 Psychiatrist/200,000 Inhabitants in Low-Income Countries (source WHO)

All of us will one day face the day when we are “elderly.” Aging comes with psychological, social, and environmental vulnerabilities. Older adults have a higher risk of various infections and a decrease in all forms of the immune response. Covid 19 has had a significant psycho-social impact. Health anxiety, chronic stress, adjustment disorders, depression, and insomnia are the major offshoots. Social isolation of the elderly is a ‘serious public health concern’ because it can increase loneliness, particularly in settings like nursing or old-age homes. We feel that helping the elderly and not-yet-elderly using light, color, and sound stimuli can substantially impact their mental health and well-being. Please stay tuned to hear more about our research on this topic in the upcoming newsletters.
