The Blue Frog Lounge combines a performance space, dining space, dance floor, and recording studios within a renovated factory space in the heart of Mumbai. When the architects showed us the initial elevation, we saw the whole nodal structure of the seating as one big light fixture tying the space together. Cylindrical dining booths in the main performance area are carved from an undulating expanse of a stepped wood frame, the surface of which is topped with translucent plexiglass and illuminated from beneath with LEDs. The result is a web of color-changing circles that delineate the individual dining areas and set the tone for a given function that has to be emphasized in the space at that moment. The aesthetic principles proclaiming the equal importance of the dark and the light are particularly relevant to this architecture. At Blue Frog, the shadowy environment accentuates music and sound, while also creating a cool, mysterious ambiance to suit the audience’s needs.
