As part of a new financial center for Saudi Arabia, we worked with the architects on two development parcels 4.11 and 5.05. These parcels covered a total area of 0.5 million square meters and provided floor space for a mix of office, residential, educational, sports, retail, cultural, and religious spaces. Throughout the development, protected skywalks encourage pedestrian traffic, and a monorail system promotes the use of public transportation. A traditional “wadi,” a dry river bed that collects runoff, allows for the creation of continuous public green space connecting four of the developments while providing shelter for local plants and animals. Given the location of the two development parcels within the overall development, we developed an exterior lighting design that provides an exciting visual bookend to the development. The facades provided a dynamic interactive canvas of light for the city of Riyadh to enjoy as they drive past the development. The interior lobby spaces are lit such that they relate to the exterior development in a continuum, creating transparencies and textures that draw the visitor in, while staying connected to the landscape.
