Located in Gurgaon, India, Medicity is a 1,600-bed, holistic health center; it is the largest hospital in all of Asia. We wanted to create an uplifting and happy space, far removed from how we generally see hospitals. Light and lighting can be very powerful healers, and seeing the results of our design on the people has been gratifying. In order to optimize patient’s experience of care and comfort, all elements of the lighting design strategy were designed to work with and integrate with other building systems. It was a tremendous opportunity to create a difference, especially among people who were unwell and recovering. The entrance lobby ceiling features recess-lit reveals cut in the shapes of the DNA helix structure. A large, eye-catching, backlit installation titled “Tree of Life,” by renowned sculptor Mitch Cretin stands prominently at the hospital entrance.
