The Sultan Qaboos Youth Complex (SQYC) is located in Salalah, the Sultanate of Oman. This complex is built on an 89,000-square-meter area (22 acres) and provides a new and welcome addition to the youth in this part of Oman to partake in physical, cultural, and educational activities. The complex is divided into two parts— the first for young men and the other for young women. Each division has a covered swimming pool and a gymnasium. The complex has a large hall for indoor sports competitions including basketball, volleyball, handball, and table tennis.
For a project of this scale, the lighting must be exciting yet unified and provide moments in time and space that work as catalysts for in-teraction and community. Given the program-matic requirements of this project, designing and executing elements that provide a “visual stitch” became an important directive for de-sign development. The architecture provided us enough materiality and massing that the lighting design “stitch” element was generated through a consistent approach of lighting the arches on the facade.
